One dish, one pot, pressure cooking, fuss free indulgence

I am a purist for the most part. Fads and trends are happily and easily ignored by me. What occupied many today, and then is dropped by them tomorrow, for another momentary passing indulgence, is often not even a thought that I contemplate.

As we mourn situation in Japan, our "girls" thrill us with babies

Charlie holding a baby that looks all about chocolate. Also resembles his mommy almost entirely. The markings are all brown. Darker or light, they are chocolate as chocolate can be. The babies were found Saturday night, and were born all naturally. Marc Durrin, the caretaker found them and alerted us to their birth. Tis' the season for kids, and so this was welcome news. Now we have kids that might make Floyd Cardoz smile with glee. Depressed over the earthquake and its aftermath, we needed some good news. This was as sweet as it could get.

Winter - Solitary confinement (almost) and a surprise gift, lead to happy cooking (and thinking)

Thrilled to have spent a few days at the farm last weekend and the early part of this week. The highlight was having an advance copy of Kristine Kidd's book sitting at the kitchen counter. Now I have reason to cook, even if alone and for none but myself or Charlie when he is also at the farm. Weeknight Fresh & Fast: Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week is a wonderful cookbook with great recipes and attractive photos too. Best still, these are the creations of Kristine, the very talented and gifted food editor at Bon Appetit whilst Barbara Fairchild was the editor-in-chief. Try these recipes and you will eat happily, healthily and without fuss.

Spring is here! Even if the grounds paint another picture....

This morning we woke up to a white blanket covering everything visible to our eyes. As the morning progressed into the afternoon, the green layers began peeking out. Is it really spring yet? Yes it is. This is nothing too out of the ordinary. The savvy amongst us, plant nothing till May 1st. They know any moment, snow could fall and take with it sensitive plantings. This also is a reminder of the changing seasons of North Country, and how life is never too boring in this rural area.
